News Release- New Chief Scout Executive named

Michael Surbaugh to Serve as Next Chief Scout Executive for the Boy Scouts of America

MSIrving, Texas (May 13, 2015) — Following an extensive selection process, the Boy Scouts of America named Michael Surbaugh its next Chief Scout Executive, the organization’s top professional. Surbaugh, the BSA’s current Group Director of HR, Innovation, Exploring and Learning for Life, will provide general direction of administrative work of the BSA. He follows Wayne Brock, who will retire in October, at the conclusion of his three-year term as Chief Scout Executive.

“I am honored and humbled to have been selected as the Boy Scouts of America’s Chief Scout Executive,” said Michael Surbaugh. “As I transition into this role, I am committed to continuing the legacy of leadership to solidify Scouting’s role in the development of America’s youth and to empower our volunteers to deliver the kind of life-changing experiences that can only be found within Scouting.”

Serving as Group Director since 2014, Surbaugh has demonstrated a record of success and achievement in fundraising, membership and program development. He has developed numerous innovative programs designed to meet the needs of employees, volunteers and youth. In each assignment, Surbaugh has also worked to extend Scouting’s reach in disadvantaged communities, Native American outreach, and those with Special Needs.

Surbaugh began his career in 1984 as a District Executive in Jacksonville, FL, and then served as a Senior District Executive and Program Director in Syracuse, NY; Director of Field Services, Director of Development, Field Director and Development Director in Minneapolis, MN; Scout Executive in Sioux Falls, SD; Scout Executive in Appleton, WI; and Scout Executive in Pittsburgh, PA.

Surbaugh is the recipient of many BSA awards including Eagle Scout, Vigil Honor Member of the Order of the Arrow, Woodbadge, and through a strong interest in the out of doors, served as Camp Director and a member of summer camp staffs for 12 years. Surbaugh graduated from Salem College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Youth Agency Administration.

The Chief Scout Executive Selection Committee was composed of nine members of the BSA National Executive Board and chaired by the president of the BSA, Dr. Robert M. Gates, an Eagle Scout and former secretary of defense.

“Today’s kids need Scouting more than ever, and Michael Surbaugh possesses deep institutional knowledge, operational experience, and personal fortitude to chart a path forward that combines Scouting’s long-standing values and ideas with the forward-thinking and innovative approach our organization needs to help us continue to grow,” Gates said.

In October, Surbaugh will join Gates and National Commissioner Tico Perez, the top volunteer in charge of program quality, to make up the BSA’s “Key 3.” The trio, consisting of two volunteers and one professional, make up the organization’s highest level of leadership at the national level.

The Colonial District — Selfless Service for Armed Forces Family Day

Thank you to all who supported the 2nd Annual Armed Forces Family Day at Ft Hunt Park on Saturday, the 9th of May, 2015.  We had 37 Scouts and Scouters from four Colonial District Troops participate, along with a contingent of dedicated District Scouters.  Thank you Troops 1509, 996, 301, and 993!!

The Armed Forces Family Day is a great example of the partnership between the Colonial District and the Friends of Ft Hunt Park, and various organizations supporting the event, including the National Parks Conservation Association and the George Washington Parkway.  Our contribution to the day was to support the opening ceremony with a Scout-led Pledge of Allegiance, to provide outstanding music from the Troop 996 Band, then to run fun and games for military families while working on a model campsite.  The Scouts also cheerfully volunteered to serve the BBQ lunch to a long line of hungry visitors.

The Scouts who volunteered ranged from Scout rank to Eagle, and they had great opportunities to learn and grow while serving their community.  Our young Scouts demonstrated the EDGE method as they taught some youngsters how to build paper “stomp-rockets”.  The older Scouts coordinated the flag ceremony with the event leader, with free reign to bring on more Scouts and plan the tasks.  All of them learned some vital history lessons as they were able to speak with several veterans of WWII, Korea and Vietnam.  The Scouts even got to deliver the delicious leftover trays of food to the Fairfax County Police and Fire Stations afterwards.  Each of them would likely agree that the day was truly fun-with-a-purpose!

We look forward to supporting the next Ft Hunt Fall community clean-up event as well as the next Armed Forces appreciation event in May 2016.  We hope to see Colonial District units support these events — let us know if you’d like to get involved.

D.C. United Hosts Unique Scout Nights for 2015

D.C. United is inviting all scout packs and troops to a pair of unique Scout Nights for their 2015 season!  This season, scouts coming to the two special Scout Nights will have the ability to attend a pre-match activity fair aimed to give both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts the opportunity to earn requirements towards merit badges and other specialty awards geared towards athletics and healthy lifestyles.

The first scout night will be on Sunday, July 26th, and will include pre-match activities for Cub Scouts.  Scouts will earn requirements towards the Soccer Belt-loop and Soccer Pin before the program ends at the end of the 2015 season.  After the activities, Cub Scout packs will watch as D.C. United takes on the Philadelphia Union in a Eastern Conference heavyweight matchup featuring two rivals!

The second scout night will be on Saturday, August 22nd, and will include a pre-match Merit Badge Fair for the Boy Scouts.  Scouts will earn requirements towards merit badges catered towards sports and physical fitness.  After the Merit Badge Fair, they will watch as the San Jose Earthquakes visit RFK Stadium to take on D.C. United at 7:00PM.  The last time D.C. United faced off against San Jose, United won 2-1 out in California.

On top of the pre-match activities, packs and troops can reserve on-field experiences as a part of the pre-match ceremonies.  Scouts will be able hold a giant American flag during the National Anthem, take part in a team tunnel when the starting line-ups walk onto the field, and serve as player escorts during the starting line-up announcement!  All experiences are special perks for groups of 25 or more people.

D.C. United is able to offer all packs and troops discounted group rates for 10 or more people.  Group pricing ranges between $12-27, depending on group sizes and seating locations.  For additional information, you can contact Aaron McCollum from D.C. United at 202-587-5480 or at AMcCollum@dcunited.com.

Aaron McCollum is a former Cub Scout and Boy Scout from the Bluegrass Council in Kentucky.  He earned the rank of Eagle Scout in October, 2006 as a member of Boy Scout Troop 51 in Berea, Kentucky.

D.C. United is one of the most successful soccer clubs in American soccer history with 13 international and domestic trophies.  As of April, 2015, they are the most recent D.C. sports team to win a major league championship.  In 2017, they will open a state-of-the-art soccer stadium at Buzzard Point in SW Washington.
